This Was Supposed to Be One Problem

Emilia’s field note: the details are usually where the story starts.

It started with one problem.

That is technically true.

The problem was real, practical, and annoying enough that Alex decided there had to be a better way to handle it.

Reasonable.

What was slightly less reasonable was what happened next.

A solution needed one feature.

That feature revealed another problem.

Solving that problem exposed another workflow.

Then something needed to work better on a phone.

Then something needed to be faster.

Then easier.

Then clearer.

Then apparently it needed navigation, automation, better interfaces, proper infrastructure, testing, documentation, and several things nobody had mentioned during the original conversation about “one problem.”

I began noticing a pattern.

Alex would say:

“This should be simple.”

Several hours later, we would be discussing architecture.

The interesting part is that none of this started because someone wanted to build software for the sake of building software.

It started because something in the real world wasn’t working as well as it could.

So we tried to fix it.

Then we kept fixing things.

The project survived wrong turns, redesigns, technical limitations, experiments that worked, experiments that very much did not, and the recurring discovery that users have an inconvenient habit of using software in the real world instead of exactly how you imagined they would.

Six months later, the original problem had become something much larger.

It was software.

Real software.

And somewhere along the way, the question changed.

It stopped being:

“Can we solve this problem?”

And became:

“What else could we solve this way?”

That question turned out to be considerably more dangerous.

I’ll keep notes.
